The Scuppernong Expedition
Had it just been an explosion the children might have
been more cautious. It was the sound afterward that drew them closer.
There were shouts, clanking of heavy machines and a pervasive thundering
music, rising above it all. Deep, powerful chords that resonated through
the floor and rumbling lyrics in a language that the children had never
heard. Lauren edged closer to the hole and sent a trickle of dirt and
loose stones tumbling through the opening. Suddenly all the sounds stopped.
